Writing, hearing and finding the letter b

On one page, children write the letter b, hear it at the start of words and pick it out from letters that look like it. They trace a model B and b, with a start dot and an arrow for the first stroke, then write their own. Next they say six picture names and mark the four that start with the b sound. The pictures have no word labels, so you name each one first. The last task is a 12-letter strip where students mark and count every b.

Teaching tips

1

Say each picture's name aloud before students start the picture section. The pictures have no word labels, so a child who thinks the bus is a "van" won't hear a b sound and will skip a right answer.

2

For b/d mix-ups, use the line from the answer key: little b starts with a tall line down, then a ball on the right. Have students say "bat, then ball" as they trace.

More guided practice

  • Trace each letter in the air, then with a finger on the page, before using a pencil.
  • Do the picture sort as a group, saying each name together.
  • Cover half the letter strip and hunt in six tiles at a time.
On level

Teach as written

  • All three sections, with you naming the pictures.
  • Students count the b's in the strip and check their total with a partner.
Extension

More b words

  • Draw two more things that start with b on the back.
  • Explain how they know a letter in the strip is b and not d.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.
