Blending and spelling three-letter CVC words

CVC words have three letters with a short vowel in the middle, like jam. Students blend six of them in sound boxes, tapping a dot under each sound and sliding along the arrow before writing the word. Next they name pictures such as a fox and a bus and pick the right spelling from three words that look almost the same. Two word ladders, cat to hat to bat and cup to cap to map, finish the set, and the answer key sets out the blending routine to model first.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Blend three sounds to read a CVC word.
  • Choose the written word that matches a picture from three that differ by one letter.
  • Spell a new CVC word by changing its first letter or its vowel.
  • Read words with each short vowel: a, e, i, o and u.

Teaching tips

1

Model the tap-and-slide routine once with jam, as the card on the key describes, then have the class echo you before they try net and zip alone.

2

In the cup ladder, the first change is the vowel (cup to cap), not the first letter. A child who changes the c will write a word that doesn't fit the cap picture; have them say both words slowly and listen for which sound moved.

3

Blend and Read has no pictures, so a child who writes jam as jab or ham has guessed from part of the word. Ask them to touch all three dots again, saying each sound.

Support

Tap it together

  • Do Blend and Read words 1 and 2 together, tapping each dot aloud.
  • Cover one of the three choices in each Picture Match row so students pick from two.
  • Give magnetic letters for the ladders so students swap one tile instead of writing.
On level

Teach as written

  • All three sections, starting with the tap-and-slide demo from the key.
  • Students read each finished ladder aloud: cat, hat, bat; cup, cap, map.
Extension

Longer ladders

  • Add a third step to each ladder, such as bat to bit, and draw a picture for it.
  • Make a new Picture Match row with three words one letter apart, for a partner.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.
