On one page, children write the letter b, hear it at the start of words and pick it out from letters that look like it. They trace a model B and b, with a start dot and an arrow for the first stroke, then write their own. Next they say six picture names and mark the four that start with the b sound. The pictures have no word labels, so you name each one first. The last task is a 12-letter strip where students mark and count every b.
Say each picture's name aloud before students start the picture section. The pictures have no word labels, so a child who thinks the bus is a "van" won't hear a b sound and will skip a right answer.
For b/d mix-ups, use the line from the answer key: little b starts with a tall line down, then a ball on the right. Have students say "bat, then ball" as they trace.
