Adding two single-digit numbers

Children add pairs of one-digit numbers, with a number line from 0 to 18 across the top of page 1 to start at the bigger number and hop forward. Picture problems and a row of doubles, such as 6 + 6 and 9 + 9, come first. Ten of the 15 facts on page 2 cross 10, like 9 + 4 and 8 + 6, which is where counting on gets slow and making ten helps. The key ends with one worked example of each strategy.

Bring it into your classroom.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Add two single-digit numbers with sums up to 18.
  • Count on from the larger number using a number line.
  • Find the sums of doubles up to 9 + 9.
  • Count two groups of pictures and write the total.

Teaching tips

1

For 2 + 9, a student who counts on from 2 makes nine hops. Point to the number line direction: start at 9 instead and hop just twice.

2

For facts like 9 + 4, use the key's make-ten move: take 1 from the 4 to turn the 9 into a ten, so 9 + 4 is the same as 10 + 3.

Ways to adjust the picture problems and facts for different students.

Support

Count and hop

  • Do the three picture problems with real counters before students write the total.
  • Have students put a finger on the number line and hop for every page 2 fact.
  • Start page 2 with the five facts that stay under 10, such as 7 + 2 and 6 + 3.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages, picture problems first.
  • Students circle the page 2 facts they solved by making ten.
Extension

Beyond doubles

  • Use each doubles answer to solve a near double, like 6 + 7 from 6 + 6.
  • Write three other pairs of single-digit numbers that make 13.

Standards alignment.

Each one is checked against the official documents. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Common Core Math · Grades 1–2
1.OA.C.6Add within 20 using strategies such as counting on, making ten and doubles

Students add one-digit numbers up to sums of 18 using counting on, doubles and make ten (the teacher tip shows 9 + 4 as 10 + 3). Subtraction is not covered.

1.OA.C.5Relate counting to addition, such as counting on

Students start at the bigger number on a number line and hop forward to add, and count two picture groups to find how many in all.

2.OA.B.2Fluently add within 20; know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory

Students write 22 sums of two one-digit numbers for practice toward knowing them by heart. It is not a timed fluency check, and subtraction is not covered.

TEKS Math · Grade 1
1.3(D)Basic fact strategies within 20

Students add single-digit numbers with sums up to 18 using counting on, doubles and making ten, plus picture groups; subtraction facts are not included.

How is it different from the Math Addition Worksheet?

Every problem here adds two single-digit numbers. The Math Addition Worksheet starts with facts to 20 and moves on to two-digit sums with regrouping.
