Writing, counting and finding the number 3

Children write, count and find the number 3 across two pages, starting with a big 3 they trace with a finger. They color exactly three objects in each group, show three on a ten frame, and check the groups of ladybugs, strawberries and ducks that have three. In a tile hunt, E and 8 are mixed in with the 3s because they look so similar. The answer key includes a tip for children who write 3 backward.

Teaching tips

1

In Color 3, the hard part is stopping: with 6 stars, some children color them all. Have them touch and count each one aloud as they color, and stop at three.

2

For a child who writes 3 backward, use the key's check: hold their 3 next to the big 3 on page 1, where both bumps open to the left.

3

If a child's Find the 3s count is more than 6, they have marked an E or an 8. Have them trace the tile with a finger: a 3 is open on the left side.

Support

Count with objects

  • Give three counters to place on the ten frame and on each Color 3 group before coloring.
  • Trace the big 3 in sand or on a desk with a finger before using a pencil.
  • Cover row 2 of Find the 3s and hunt in the first eight tiles.

Teach as written

  • Both student pages, ending with the Ways to Show 3 strip.
  • Students touch and count aloud on every group in Count and Circle.
Extension

More ways to show 3

  • Draw three tally marks and three dots in a new way, like the strip.
  • Fix the B and C groups in Count and Circle so they have three, by crossing out or drawing.

Standards alignment.

Each one is checked against the official documents. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Common Core Math · Kindergarten

K.CC.A.3Write numbers 0 to 20 and match a numeral to a group of objects

Students trace the numeral 3 and the word three, and match 3 to dots, tally marks and objects. Only the number 3 is covered.

K.CC.B.4.aCount objects one by one, pairing each object with one number name

Students count the 3s they find among other numbers and letters, and count each group of pictures one at a time. The numbers stay very small.
