Graphing and writing lines in slope-intercept form

Students graph lines from slope-intercept form and write equations from tables and graphs. The worked example plots y = 2x − 3 from its y-intercept, counting right 1 and up 2. One line is written y = 8 − (2/3)x, so students reorder it before reading the slope, and one table starts at x = 1, so they work back a step to find the y-intercept. A taxi fare problem asks them to go from distance to cost and back, and to explain what the slope means for the rider.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Identify the slope and y-intercept of a line in slope-intercept form.
  • Graph a line by plotting the y-intercept and counting the slope.
  • Write the equation of a line from a table of values or a graph.
  • Write and use a linear equation for a rate with a starting amount.
  • Explain what the slope means in a real situation.

Teaching tips

1

Line 6, y = 8 − (2/3)x, is the one students read backward, giving the slope as 8 and the y-intercept as −2/3. Have them rewrite it as y = −(2/3)x + 8 first, as the key does.

2

For line 8, y = (3/4)x − 2, students often count up 4 and right 3. Say the slope as rise over run, up 3 and right 4, and check that the line passes through (4, 1).

3

Table 11 has no x = 0 column, so some students give −6 as the y-intercept. Ask them to step back from x = 1 to x = 0 by adding 4, which gives −2.

Support

Plot first, then write

  • Pre-plot the y-intercept on the blank grids for lines 7 and 8.
  • Have students write each slope as a fraction over 1 when it is a whole number, so 3 becomes 3 over 1.
  • Start Table to Equation with table 9, which begins at x = 0.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages, plotting at least three points before drawing each line.
  • Students test each table equation on the last column of its table.
Extension

Lines from two clues

  • Write the equation of the line through (2, 1) and (4, 7), then graph it.
  • Change the taxi's starting charge and explain which part of the graph moves and which stays the same.

Standards alignment.

Each one is checked against the official documents. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Common Core Math · Grade 8
8.F.B.4Write a linear function; find and interpret the rate of change and starting value from a description, table or graph

Students find the slope and y-intercept from tables and graphs and write the equation, write the taxi fare as y = 2.25x + 3.50, and explain what the slope means for a taxi ride.

8.F.A.3Understand y = mx + b as a linear function whose graph is a straight line

Students name the slope and y-intercept in six equations and graph lines from y = mx + b by plotting the y-intercept and using the slope. Giving examples of functions that are not linear is not covered.

8.EE.B.6Use similar triangles to explain slope; derive y = mx and y = mx + b

Students use rise over run between points to graph lines and read slopes. The similar-triangle explanation and deriving the equations are not covered.

TEKS Math · Grade 8
8.5(I)Write y = mx + b equations

Students write line equations from tables, graphs and a taxi fare rule.

8.4(C)Find slope and y-intercept from tables and graphs

Students find the slope and y-intercept from three tables and two graphs and explain what the taxi's slope means; slope from similar triangles is not covered.

8.5(B)Show non-proportional lines

Students graph lines such as y = -2x + 4 from their equations and link tables, graphs and equations; one line (y = 5x) is proportional, which falls outside this expectation.

Good to know.

Does it cover point-slope or standard form?

No. Every line is in slope-intercept form, y = mx + b, apart from line 6, which only needs reordering.
