Naming and placing fractions on a number line

Students name and place fractions on number lines, starting with a worked example that splits 0 to 1 into fourths and shows 4/4 at the same point as 1. They fill in missing fractions, mark fractions such as 2/3 and 5/8, and on page 2 work on lines that run to 2 and 3, with whole numbers above and fractions below. A trail problem with a post at every eighth of the way asks how far a walker at post 5 has gone. The key adds a whole-class floor number line activity.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Name the fraction at each tick mark on a number line from 0 to 1.
  • Place a given fraction on a number line.
  • Locate fractions greater than 1, such as 5/3 and 7/4.
  • Identify equivalent fractions as fractions at the same point.
  • Solve a distance problem on a number line marked in eighths.

Teaching tips

1

The key's warning: a sixths line has 7 tick marks but 6 spaces. Students who count tick marks write sevenths, so have them count the spaces between 0 and 1.

2

On the past-1 lines, have students say the fractions aloud from 0: one third, two thirds, three thirds, four thirds. Hearing three thirds land on the 1 shows why 4/3 comes after it.

Ways to adjust the number line work for different students.

Support

Fold a strip first

  • Fold a paper strip into halves, then fourths, then eighths, and line it up under the eighths lines.
  • Do the first two Section B lines together.
  • Skip the 0 to 3 halves line in Section D.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages in order, starting from the worked example.
  • Students check each Section B line by counting the spaces out loud.
Extension

More matching points

  • Find a third fraction at the same point for each Section E pair, such as 9/12 for 3/4 and 6/8.
  • Extend the trail to 2 miles and name the post at the one-and-a-half-mile point.

Standards alignment.

Each one is checked against the official documents. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Common Core Math · Grade 3
3.NF.A.2.bShow a fraction a/b on a number line by marking off a lengths of 1/b

Students count equal parts from 0 to label tick marks (such as 2/3, 5/8 and 7/4) and find posts on a trail marked in eighths of a mile.

3.NF.A.2.aShow a unit fraction 1/b on a number line by splitting 0 to 1 into b equal parts

Students see that a number line from 0 to 1 split into 4 equal parts makes each part 1/4, and label number lines split into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths.

3.NF.A.3.aTwo fractions are equivalent if they are at the same point on a number line

Students find pairs of fractions at the same point on two lined-up number lines, such as 2/6 and 1/3, and match the bench at 3/4 mile to post 6 (6/8).

TEKS Math · Grade 3
3.3(B)Name a fraction on a number line

Students write the missing fractions at tick marks on number lines split into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths; the Past 1 part goes beyond this expectation's limit of one.

3.3(A)Show fractions on a number line

Students mark the point for fractions such as 2/3 and 5/8 and find a bench at 3/4 mile on a trail; only number lines are used, not objects or strip diagrams.

3.3(F)Show equivalent fractions

Students circle the two fractions that sit at the same point, such as 2/6 and 1/3, and match 3/4 to 6/8 on the trail; only number lines are used.
