Naming and placing fractions on a number line

Students name and place fractions on number lines, starting with a worked example that splits 0 to 1 into quarters and shows 4/4 at the same point as 1. They fill in missing fractions, mark fractions such as 2/3 and 5/8, and on page 2 work on lines that run to 2 and 3, with whole numbers above and fractions below. A trail problem with a post at every eighth of the way asks how far a walker at post 5 has gone. The key adds a whole-class floor number line activity.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Name the fraction at each tick mark on a number line from 0 to 1.
  • Place a given fraction on a number line.
  • Locate fractions greater than 1, such as 5/3 and 7/4.
  • Identify equivalent fractions as fractions at the same point.
  • Solve a distance problem on a number line marked in eighths.

Teaching tips

1

The key's warning: a sixths line has 7 tick marks but 6 spaces. Students who count tick marks write sevenths, so have them count the spaces between 0 and 1.

2

On the past-1 lines, have students say the fractions aloud from 0: one third, two thirds, three thirds, four thirds. Hearing three thirds land on the 1 shows why 4/3 comes after it.

Ways to adjust the number line work for different students.

Support

Fold a strip first

  • Fold a paper strip into halves, then quarters, then eighths, and line it up under the eighths lines.
  • Do the first two Section B lines together.
  • Skip the 0 to 3 halves line in Section D.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages in order, starting from the worked example.
  • Students check each Section B line by counting the spaces out loud.
Extension

More matching points

  • Find a third fraction at the same point for each Section E pair, such as 9/12 for 3/4 and 6/8.
  • Extend the trail to 2 miles and name the post at the one-and-a-half-mile point.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Australian Curriculum: Mathematics · Year 4
AC9M4N04Fractions on number lines

Students label missing fractions on number lines, mark given fractions, continue past 1 (such as 4/3 and 5/2) and solve a trail problem in eighths of a mile; fractions past 1 stay as improper fractions and are not written as mixed numerals.

AC9M4N03Equivalent fractions

Students use matching number lines to find fractions at the same point, such as 3/4 and 6/8, and 1/3 and 2/6; links between fractions and decimals are not covered.
