Sign rules for multiplying and dividing integers

Page 1 sets out the sign rules for multiplying and dividing integers, including how to count negatives when there are more than two factors, with worked examples such as (−6)(4)(−2) = 48. Students find eight products and eight quotients, including zero cases and (−1)(−2)(−3)(−4). On page 2 they predict signs before computing, write equations for a temperature drop, a descending elevator and account debits, and find two integers with a product of −24 and a sum of 5. The key shows how many negatives sit behind each sign.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Apply the sign rules to multiply and divide integers.
  • Find the sign of a product with three or more factors by counting negatives.
  • Find products and quotients that involve zero.
  • Write and solve an integer equation for a real situation.
  • Find a missing factor, divisor or dividend.

Teaching tips

1

Sign Detective c, −120 ÷ (−8) ÷ (−3), catches students who see two divisions by negatives and call it positive. Count the negatives including the −120: three, so the answer is −5, as the key shows.

2

Items 4 and 12, (−13)(0) and 0 ÷ (−9), are both 0. Students often write −13 or −9, or mix item 12 up with dividing by zero; point to the zero rule on the sign card.

3

In situation 18 the elevator goes down, so the answer is −14 each second, not 14. Ask students what the minus sign means in each real-life answer before they write it.

Ways to adjust the 23 numbered items and the challenge.

Support

Sign first, then number

  • Have students write the sign of each answer next to the item before computing, using the sign table.
  • Start with the two-factor items, 1 to 5 and 9 to 15, before the longer ones.
  • Split item 16 into two lines: (−6)(10) first, then divide by −4.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages, with the sign said out loud before each Sign Detective value.
  • Students compare their equation for each situation with a partner's.
Extension

Find every pair

  • List every integer pair with a product of −24, then pick the pair with a sum of 5.
  • Write a five-factor Sign Detective item with a positive answer.
  • Explain why item d, six factors of −1, comes out positive.

Standards alignment.

Each one is checked against the official documents. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Common Core Math · Grade 7
7.NS.A.2.aRules for multiplying signed numbers; real-world products

Students use the sign rules to multiply two or more integers, predict the sign by counting negative factors, and write products for a falling temperature and bank debits. The file states the rules rather than showing why they follow from the distributive property, and it uses integers only, not fractions or decimals.

7.NS.A.2.bDividing integers; real-world quotients

Students divide integers using the same sign rules, divide zero by a negative number, and find the elevator's change in height each second. Writing negative fractions three ways, such as −(p/q) = (−p)/q, is not covered.

7.NS.A.3Solve problems with the four operations on rational numbers

Students write and solve equations for three real-life situations and find missing integers in multiplication and division equations. Only integers and only multiplication and division are used; adding and subtracting, fractions and decimals are not.

TEKS Math · Grade 6
6.3(D)Operations with integers

Students multiply and divide positive and negative integers, predict signs, find missing integers and solve three real-life problems; adding and subtracting integers is not covered.

Good to know.

Does it include adding and subtracting integers?

Only in the challenge, which asks for a sum. Every other item is multiplication or division.
