Adding and subtracting within 100

Students add and subtract two-digit numbers within 100 across two pages. They write four facts for each of three fact-family triangles, then solve eight vertical problems where 72 − 45 and three others need regrouping. In four short stories, from cans for a food drive to seats on a ferry, they decide whether to add or subtract and check with the opposite operation. A missing-number row moves the blank around, as in ___ − 26 = 58, and the answer key accepts the facts in any order.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Write the four facts in a fact family.
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers, regrouping when needed.
  • Decide whether a story calls for addition or subtraction.
  • Check a subtraction with addition, and an addition with subtraction.
  • Find a missing number in an addition or subtraction equation.

Teaching tips

1

Part B puts plus and minus problems side by side, with 86 − 52 straight after two additions. Have students circle the sign before they solve each one.

2

For the missing numbers, use the key's question: is the missing number a part or the whole? In ___ − 26 = 58 the missing number is the whole, so students add 26 and 58.

Ways to adjust the fact families, problems and stories for different students.

Support

No regrouping first

  • Start with the four problems that need no regrouping: 34 + 25, 86 − 52, 61 + 17 and 98 − 63.
  • Read each story aloud and act it out with counters before students choose Add or Subtract.
  • Give a hundred chart for the missing-number row.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages, fact families first.
  • Every story gets a written check line before it counts as done.
Extension

Write your own

  • Write two stories for the fact family 48, 19 and 67, one adding and one subtracting.
  • Make up two missing-number equations with the blank first, like ___ + 45 = 91, for a partner.

Standards alignment.

Each one is checked against the official documents. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Common Core Math · Grade 2
2.NBT.B.5Fluently add and subtract within 100

Students add and subtract two-digit numbers, write fact families that show how addition and subtraction undo each other, and find missing numbers. It is practice, not a timed fluency check.

2.OA.A.1Solve one- and two-step word problems within 100

Students read four stories, decide whether to add or subtract, write a number sentence, and check it with the opposite operation. All stories are one step, so two-step problems and compare stories are not covered.

TEKS Math · Grade 2
2.4(B)Add and subtract two-digit numbers

Students add and subtract two-digit numbers, write fact families, and find missing numbers; adding three or four numbers at once is not practiced.

2.4(C)Solve add and subtract word problems

Students choose add or subtract for four one-step stories, solve them and check with the opposite operation; multi-step problems and numbers above 100 are not included.
