Multiplication facts 0 to 9, one strategy at a time

Students learn multiplication facts 0 to 9 by strategy, one group of factors at a time. Page 1 covers ×0, ×1, ×2 and ×5. Page 2 teaches ×3 as a double plus one more group, ×4 as double then double again, and ×9 with the finger trick. Page 3 handles ×6, ×7 and ×8 by breaking off a five, so 6 × 7 is 5 × 7 plus 7, or by doubling a known fact. Students dot the facts that took a while and copy up to three.

Learning objectives

  • Recall multiplication facts with factors 0 to 9.
  • Use doubling to find ×2 and ×4 facts.
  • Skip-count by fives to find ×5 facts.
  • Find an unknown fact from a known one by breaking off a five or doubling.
  • Pick out the facts they still need to work on.

Teaching tips

1

Page 1 puts the ×0 and ×1 rows side by side, and students often swap the rules, writing 0 × 8 = 8. Have them read those two tip cards aloud before starting.

2

Before page 3, have students say the fact they would start from for 7 × 6: 5 × 6 = 30, plus one more 6 is 42. Ask for the starting fact out loud on the first few items.

3

Use the tracker as the key suggests: students say which trick fits each fact they copied, and you quiz those facts again a day or two later.

Ways to adjust the strategy pages for different students.

Support

One strategy at a time

  • Do one factor row a day, starting with ×0, ×1, ×2 and ×5.
  • Let students draw dots in equal groups for any ×3 or ×4 fact they aren't sure of.
  • Hold the ×6, ×7 and ×8 page until pages 1 and 2 are secure.
On level

Teach as written

  • Pages 1 to 3 in order, reading each tip card first.
  • Students fill in the tracker after page 2 and recheck those facts after page 3.
Extension

Explain the tricks

  • Use the ×9 finger trick to explain why 9 × 6 = 54.
  • Find 8 × 8 two ways: by doubling 4 × 8 and by breaking off a five.
  • Write the turnaround fact for each mixed review item.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Ontario Mathematics (2020) · Grade 4
B2.2Multiplication facts to 10 × 10

Students practise multiplication facts from 0 to 9, grouped by strategy, then mix them in a review and track the facts they find hard. Related division facts and the 10s are not practised.

B2.1Use properties of operations

Tip cards show how to use facts they know, such as splitting 6 × 7 into 5 × 7 plus 7 and doubling 4 × 7 to get 8 × 7. Students are not asked to solve problems or check calculations with these properties.

Good to know.

Does it cover facts up to 12?

No. Every factor is 0 to 9, organized by strategy. For mixed facts to 12 × 12, see the Facts 0–12 multiplication worksheet.
