Multiplication as equal groups and arrays

This page teaches what multiplication means through pictures. Students write a multiplication sentence for each dot array and each set of equal circles, find 4 × 7 and 2 × 8 and draw them as arrays, and decide whether 5 rows of 3 and 3 rows of 5 give the same product. Two story problems, about crayons in cups and rows of tomato plants, ask for the unit word after the answer. The key accepts factors in either order, since 5 × 4 also describes 4 rows of 5.

Students will

Learning objectives

  • Write a multiplication sentence for an array or a picture of equal groups.
  • Draw an array for a multiplication fact.
  • Show that turning an array around gives the same product.
  • Solve an equal-groups story problem with a multiplication sentence.

Teaching tips

1

In Part A, ask students to say "4 rows of 5" or "3 groups of 7" before writing. Students who count every dot one by one get the total but not the two factors the sentence needs.

2

When students draw the Part B arrays, rows often end up with different numbers of dots. Have them count each row before they count the total.

Ways to adjust the page for different students.

Support

Build it first

  • Give counters so students build each Part A picture before writing the sentence.
  • Do picture a together, saying 4 rows of 5 aloud.
  • Give grid paper for the Part B arrays.
On level

Teach as written

  • All four parts, starting from the 3 × 6 example.
  • The partner activity from the answer key after the page.
Extension

Find more arrays

  • Draw every array that has 24 dots and write a sentence for each.
  • Write a story problem for 4 × 7 like the crayon and tomato problems.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Ontario Mathematics (2020) · Grade 3
B2.6Show multiplication with arrays

Students write multiplication sentences for arrays and equal groups and draw arrays for 4 × 7 and 2 × 8. Division is not covered.

B2.7Solve multiplication problems

Students write and solve multiplication sentences for two equal-group story problems. Division and groups of halves, fourths or thirds are not covered.

B2.1Use properties of operations

Students find 5 × 3 and 3 × 5 with arrays and see that the order does not change the product. It is one short item, and the link to division is not covered.
