Reading and drawing clock times to five minutes

Across three pages, students read clocks and draw the hands, starting with hours and half hours and moving on to five-minute times such as 3:25 and 11:55. For the five-minute clocks, they count by 5s from the 12 to the minute hand. The last page asks them to match clocks to digital times and to work out the time one hour or half an hour later. One of these, 11:45 plus one hour, crosses 12. The answer key includes a note on where the hour hand should sit.

Teaching tips

1

Check the hour hand on drawn times like 4:35 and 2:45. Students often put it right on the 4 or the 2; at 2:45 it should sit most of the way to the 3.

2

Before page 2, have students count by 5s around the helper clock aloud, pointing to each number, so they link the 3 with 15 and the 9 with 45.

Differentiation

Meet every learner.

Ways to adjust the 25 clock items for different students.

Support

Hour and half hour first

  • Do page 1 on its own, and page 2 on another day.
  • Let students use the helper clock for every page 2 item, not just the drawing items.
  • Have students set each time on a clock with movable hands before drawing it.
On level

Teach as written

  • All three pages in order.
  • Students check every hour hand they draw: is it partway to the next number when it should be?
Extension

Times that cross the hour

  • Write the time half an hour later for each of the six page 2 clocks.
  • Make up two "What time will it be?" items that cross 12 and swap with a partner.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

AC9M3M04Read analog and digital time

Students read analog clocks to the hour, half hour and five minutes, draw hands for given times, match analog clocks to digital times and find the time an hour or half an hour later; times are only to the nearest five minutes, not the nearest minute.

Good to know.

Which times does it cover?

Hour and half hour on page 1, five-minute times such as 8:15 and 2:45 on page 2, and one-hour and half-hour jumps on page 3. There are no times to the single minute.
