Three-digit subtraction with regrouping

Students subtract three-digit numbers that need regrouping, after a worked example takes 524 − 268 through a hundreds, tens and ones frame with both trades marked. The nine problems get harder by row: a trade from the tens, then from the hundreds, then zeros to trade across, as in 403 − 157 and 700 − 286, where students regroup twice before they can take away the ones. A robotics club story, 605 − 368, also crosses a zero. Students show each trade above the top number.

Learning objectives

  • Subtract three-digit numbers with a trade from the tens or the hundreds.
  • Regroup across zeros, as in 700 − 286.
  • Record each trade above the top number.
  • Check a subtraction answer by adding.

Teaching tips

1

The key flags the most common slip: taking the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column, so 463 − 128 becomes 345. Have students ask "Is the top digit big enough?" before each column.

2

For the zero row, have students rewrite the top number before subtracting anything: 700 becomes 6 hundreds, 9 tens and 10 ones. Trading only once leaves an empty tens column, which is where students get stuck.

One kind of trade at a time

  • Do only the first row on day one, making each trade with base-ten blocks.
  • Redo 524 − 268 together, then work problem 1 as a second example.
  • Hold the zero row until the first two rows are right.
On level

Teach as written

  • The whole page, rows in order.
  • Students use the Check it box, then check two more answers the same way.
Extension

Explain the trades

  • Write one new problem for each row and swap with a partner.
  • Explain in words why 805 becomes 7 hundreds, 9 tens and 15 ones.
  • Solve the story problem a second way, counting up from 368 to 605.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Australian Curriculum: Mathematics · Year 3
AC9M3N03Subtract three-digit numbers by regrouping

Students subtract three-digit numbers in columns, trading a ten or a hundred (including across a zero), and solve one story problem; it covers written subtraction only, not addition or other ways to split up numbers.

AC9M3A01Addition undoes subtraction

Students check a subtraction answer by adding it back to get the starting number; it is one check item, and finding unknown values is not practised.
