Place value practice with four-digit numbers

Using 6,085 as a model, shown in a place-value chart and then in standard and expanded form, students work through 13 questions on four-digit numbers. They find the value of a bold digit in numbers with awkward zeros like 5,041, switch between standard and expanded form, count base-ten blocks in two pictures and solve two "Who am I?" riddles. A last challenge asks for the biggest number that can be made from 8, 0, 5 and 3. Every answer in the key is split into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

Teaching tips

1

Watch question 8: students often write 342 for 3,000 + 40 + 2. Ask what is in the hundreds place, then point to the zero in the worked example's 6,085.

2

If students miscount the block pictures, have them build each one with real base-ten blocks and sort the pieces into a place-value chart before writing the number.

Differentiation

Meet every learner.

Ways to adjust the 13 questions for different students.

Support

Use base-ten blocks

  • Give students base-ten blocks and a blank place-value chart for every question.
  • Do questions 1 and 5 together as extra worked examples.
  • Skip riddle 12, which needs doubling.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages, starting from the worked example.
  • Students check each expanded form by adding it back up.
Extension

Write and extend

  • Write a "Who am I?" riddle for a partner, with the places out of order.
  • Make the smallest four-digit number from 8, 0, 5 and 3, and explain why 0 can't go first.
  • Write each Section B number in words.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.
