Solving equations with the variable on both sides

A balance picture with 5x − 4 on one pan and 2x + 11 on the other opens the page. The worked example takes 2x from both sides, adds 4, divides by 3, and checks that x = 5 makes both sides equal 21. Students then solve equations with integer answers, including negatives and zero, decide for two items whether there is one solution, none or infinitely many, and compare the costs of two climbing gyms. The key shows the collected step before each answer.

Learning objectives

  • Collect variable terms on one side and constants on the other.
  • Distribute before solving an equation with parentheses.
  • Identify equations with no solution or infinitely many solutions, and explain why.
  • Check a solution by substituting it into both sides.
  • Write and solve an equation that finds when two costs are equal.

Teaching tips

1

Problem 7, 10c − 6 = 13c − 6, has the answer c = 0. Students who see −6 on both sides often call it no solution; have them finish the steps to 0 = 3c and compare it with the −8 = 5 they reach in the first What Happens? item.

2

In problem 12, −4(a + 3) becomes −4a − 12. Students who write −4a + 12 get a = 1 instead of −3, so have them check the answer in both sides.

3

For Gym Plans, some students write 35v + 4 for Peak. Ask what one visit adds at each gym, then check that v = 7 gives the same total, 63, on both plans.

Support

Follow the balance steps

  • Give students the worked example's steps as a checklist: move the variable term, move the constant, divide.
  • Do problems 1 and 5 together, moving the smaller variable term each time.
  • Leave the four Distribute First items for a second session.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages, with a substitution check written for each Distribute First answer.
  • Students explain both What Happens? items in a full sentence.
Extension

Make your own cases

  • Change one number in 4(x − 2) = 4x + 5 so it has infinitely many solutions.
  • Write an equation with the variable on both sides whose answer is −6.
  • Find how many visits make Summit cost 20 more than Peak.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

England national curriculum, Mathematics · Years 8–9
Years 7–9Key stage 3 - Algebra

Students solve equations with the variable on both sides, including ones that need brackets expanded first, check solutions, and spot equations with no solution or infinitely many.

Years 7–9Key stage 3 - Algebra

Students expand brackets such as 5(y − 2) before solving. Collecting like terms is used along the way; factorising and multiplying two brackets are not practised.

Years 7–9Key stage 3 - Algebra

Students write and solve an equation to find when two gym plans cost the same. Graphs are not used.

Good to know.

Are the answers always whole numbers?

Yes. All 12 equations solve to integers from −7 to 8, and the gym problem comes to 7 visits, so students can focus on the steps.
