Place value to the hundred thousands

Every number in this two-page set has five or six digits. A chart from hundred thousands to ones walks through 836,425, naming the 3 as ten thousands worth 30,000. Students write the place and value of bold digits, say and write numbers such as 318,507 in words, and compare pairs with <, > and =. They also work out how many times greater one 7 is than another, and the answer key writes out the multiplication behind each of those answers.

Teaching tips

1

For item 13, have students count the jumps from thousands to hundred thousands. Two jumps means 10 × 10, so the answer is 100 times, not 10.

2

Listen to how students read 318,507. Point to the comma: they read the digits before it, say "thousand", then read the last three digits.

Differentiation

Meet every learner.

Ways to adjust the chart work and big-number comparisons for different students.

Support

Use the chart

  • Give students a blank hundred-thousands chart to write each number into before answering.
  • Do items 1 and 2 together.
  • Work item 13, the 100-times question, as a group.
On level

Teach as written

  • Both pages in order, starting from the chart.
  • Students read every Section A number aloud to a partner before writing its value.
Extension

Write and compare

  • Write a clue table with a different six-digit number for a partner.
  • Find how many times greater the 7 in 700,000 is than the 7 in 70.
  • Write each Section D pair in words.

Curriculum alignment.

Each one is checked against the official document. Where the resource covers only part of a standard, the note says so.

Year 5Number - number and place value

Students name the place and value of digits in five- and six-digit numbers, write numbers in words, compare them with <, > and =, see that each place is 10 times the one to its right, and build a number from clues. Numbers stop below 1,000,000 and ordering a list is not practised.

Good to know.

Which numbers does it use?

Five- and six-digit numbers from 39,174 to 971,034, with no four-digit numbers. For four-digit place value with base-ten block pictures, see the Place Value Worksheet.
